We are now moving into the second week of this short and rich season of Advent. Last week we gathered, and I extended the invitation for us to sink into the counter-cultural aspect offered to us as a community to engage in a time of waiting. Not as a passive, unimaginative time, but rather into an intentional time to seek out the quiet, the sometimes-unnoticed holiness of taking time to breathe and sit still.

This Sunday we turn the page in our church calendar and begin the season of Advent. These are the four weeks we set aside every year to prepare our hearts to once again hear the story of how love came to dwell among us through the birth of Jesus on that cold dark night in an out of the way place to two scared and almost forgotten would-be parents. It is a story I not only never tire of hearing, but as I grow older, anticipate hearing as a necessary balm for my soul. It is a story passed down from generation to generation infused with the hope-filled expectation and imagination of a new world, a new way, a new reality.

This week has been a wonderful reminder of not only what it means to be a part of a growing community of faith in Toledo, but also a reminder of how important our connection is to the wider Episcopal Church. I began the week at a 2-day meeting of our Midwest collection of Episcopal Dioceses, Province V, bringing together all of us who are a part of the Network to Dismantle Racism.
